My School: Then and Now

School has changed a lot in the last couple of years! When I first started at Oakwood Elementary back in 3rd grade, things were really different. Looking back on it now as a 5th grader, I can hardly believe some of the ways our school has transformed. I remember walking through the old main entrance for the first time. The floors were kind of cracked and stained, and the walls were just a dull gray color. It didn't feel very welcoming or exciting. But the biggest letdown was the playground! The equipment was really run-down and there weren't many options besides some old swings and a rickety merry-go-round. The ground was just a patchy field of dirt and weeds. It wasn't much fun to play on during recess.

The classrooms weren't much better back then. The desks and chairs were pretty banged up, with scratches, dents, and some pieces of plastic even broken off. The texts books were old and outdated too. A lot of the pages were stained and falling out. My 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Franklin, had to supplement them with her own materials she paid for out of pocket. The

technology was seriously lacking as well. We only had a few very

slow desktop computers to share among the whole class. Connecting to the internet took forever and the screens were tiny and blurry.

Another thing that was very different was the lunches. The cafeteria staff used to make pretty bland, boring meals. Things like frozen corn, stale bread, lukewarm pizza, and grey-looking salisbury steak. Nothing was really fresh and it all tasted just okay at best. A lot of good food just went to waste because nobody wanted to eat it. There weren't any tasty or healthy options besides a few stale snacks and bottles of juice or milk.

Outside of the building, the parking lots had huge potholes and cracks that made it look abandoned. The landscaping was non-existent besides a few sickly bushes and patches of weeds. It honestly felt like hardly anyone took pride in the school's appearance. No wonder that old saying goes, \"Don't judge a book by its cover!\"

Fortunately, things started changing for the better thanks to a facilities bond that voters approved a couple years ago. First came all the construction trucks, dumpsters, and crews of workers showing up bright and early every morning. Having to hear jackhammers and bulldozers during class was pretty

disruptive at first! But it was all worth it for the amazing upgrades that followed.

The first thing I noticed was the brand new entrance and outdoor areas. They re-paved the parking lots and added safety islands with beautiful trees and gardens. The landscaping around the building looks like a park now, with bright green lawns and colorful flower beds. Just walking through the fresh new entrance puts a smile on my face.

Then they turned their attention to the sad old playground. It underwent an total transformation! Now we have a huge, state-of-the-art play structure with obstacle courses, climbing walls, swings, rings, and two big twisty slides. The best part is the spongy, rubberized ground covering that keeps things soft in case you take a spill. Games like tag and basketball are a lot more fun on the new courts and fields too. Recesses are way more active and exciting now.

Next came the renovations to our classrooms and hallways. Everything got repainted with vibrant colors to make things look fresher and brighter. We got all new desks, chairs, shelves, and storage units too. No more dealing with beat-up, decade-old furniture! The school invested in new classroom technology as well. Each room has a big interactive whiteboard, fast computers

for every student, and we can even borrow tablets to use. The spotty Wi-Fi got a major upgrade too.

One of the areas that changed most drastically was the library. It used to be a tiny, cramped space with outdated books and no computers. Now it's like a brilliantly lit wonderland! Huge windows let in tons of natural light, and there are all kinds of nooks, reading spaces, and lounge areas. The shelves are overflowing with thousands of new fiction and non-fiction titles. Best of all, there's a whole section with desktop computers and even a 3D printer! Going to the library is one of the highlights of my week.

Finally, the food services area received a top-to-bottom makeover. The kitchen is shiny and modern, with fancy new equipment and lots of fridge/freezer space. This has allowed them to ditch all those frozen, pre-made foods in favor of fresher, healthier ingredients. The cafeteria got an overhaul too, with comfy booths and lunch tables, fun decorations, and big screens displaying menus. Each day they offer delicious hot meals like baked chicken, pasta dishes, ethnic cuisines, and fresh salads or veggies. They even have a smoothie bar and sandwich deli station now!

Let's just say lunchtime has become one of my favorite parts of the school day. No more sad, soggy meals or going home hungry. My friends and I actually look forward to trying the daily specials, and there's so much variety that I rarely get bored with the food anymore. My mom jokes that they should hire the cafeteria staff to cook for our family!

Although these last couple years involved some major hassles and growing pains with all the noise, mess and construction zones, it was more than worth it in the end. Sometimes I'll catch myself stopping to appreciate what a wonderful, welcoming environment our school has become. Thanks to those facility improvements, Oakwood Elementary finally looks and feels like a place that values its students and staff. I'll certainly cherish these remaining few years before middle school. Who knows what other amazing changes could be in store when my future kids attend years from now? Only time will tell!
