The house itself had been sold that morning. Now it was the turn of the contents. The crowd of dealers, collectors, bargain-hunters and plain sale-goers walked about examining this and that and generally having a last look round before the excitement of the sale. Every piece was numbered and listed, and everyone had a copy of the list. The sale was to take place in the largest room, the sitting room, which had been prepared. A few people were already waiting there. The room was half full of chairs. These carried the highest numbers, so that they could be put to ordinary use till near the end. In front of the fireplace stood the salesman's desk, a box-like piece of furniture with four steps. At work, the salesman stood a meter above everyone. He was trained to notice the slightest movement of a hand, an eye, or even an eyebrow, any of which might signal a bid. Beside the desk were a table and two chairs for the clerk and the cashier. Many of the sale goods were already here, some from the bedrooms looking out of place.

Almost in the middle stood a big kitchen table covered by a blanket. The salesman came in and climbed on to his stand. His assistants followed him in and took their places.

“Ladies and gentlemen, ”the salesman said, “I have been informed to tell you that everything must be sold this afternoon. No price is too low or too high for anything, but a price I must have for everything. We are now ready to begin, and we do so with Lot Number One …”At this point two strong-looking men lifted on to the central table a large wooden chest. It seemed too big for a modern house.

“Lot Number One is an oak chest. Now what am I bid for this fine old chest? Do I hear £20? No? £10 then. Do I hear £10? Come along, ladies and gentlemen, this chest is solid oak. The wood alone is worth £40, so make me an offer for Lot Number One, just to get us started. ”His eyes swung round the room.

“One pound, ”a woman's voice called.

“One pound I'm bid, ”said the salesman eagerly, “for this splendid chest. Any advance on £1 now? One pound I'm bid. Do I hear two? No? Going at one pound then. No advance on £1? Going at £1. One pound. ”He brought his wooden hammer down sharply on to his desk. Sold for

Learning English is one of the few things I have been doing consistently over the past 16 years. Like most Chinese students, I started learning English because it was a compulsory course in my middle school. More importantly, English was a central subject for the college entrance exam.

At that time, studying English was not a pleasant experience for me. There was no fun in the process of learning. The focus of our English education was getting a good mark in exams. And nobody told me that the real meaning of studying mother language was communication.

When I became a university student, I spent nearly half of my time on English. In fact , more than 90 percent of the job offer ads in Shanghai list “ proficiency (精通) as a main requirement.

How did I improve my English? People told me that TOEFL was very helpful and useful. As a result, I took a TOEFL training course and studied like mad. After six months’ preparation, I took part in the exam and got a high score. Later on, I had a chance to further my study in Britain. I soon discovered that all of my past English learning had been futile (没用的). When I first went shopping in a local supermarket, I really could not understand what the cashier was saying at all.

It was then that I realized I had totally missed the point. Instead of just passing exams, the main function of learning English or any other language is communication. What is more, language does not exist independent of culture. Hence, mechanical memorization helps very little in communication. That’s why I was still unable to freely express myself after learning English for many years. By no means am I talented in any foreign language. I am still learning English. Why?

First and foremost, my job requires me to use English everyday. Secondly, English helps me to have access to more information. Thirdly, as a bookworm, English gives me a chance to dive into the huge pool of inspiring English books. Last but not least, it is such a great experience to write in another language. Indeed, English has become part of my life. 60. How did the writer find English when he was a student?

In our culture, the sources of what we call a sense of “mastery” — feeling important and worthwhile — and the sources of what we call a sense of “pleasure”— finding life enjoyable — are not always the same. Women often are told “You can’t have it all.” Sometimes what the speaker really is saying is: “You choose a career, so you can’t expect to have closer relationships or a happy family life.” or “You have a wonderful husband and children — what’s all this about wanting a career?” But women need to understand and develop both aspects of well-being, if they are to feel good about themselves.

Our study shows that, for women, well-being has two aspects. One is mastery, which includes self-respect, a sense of control over your life, and low levels of anxiety and depression. Mastery is closely related to the “doing” side of life, to work and activity. Pleasure is the other aspect, and it is made up of happiness, satisfaction and optimism. It is tied more closely to the “feeling” side of life. The two are independent of each other. A woman could be high in mastery and low in pleasure, and vice versa(反之亦然). For example, a woman who has a good job, but whose mother has just died, might be feeling very good about herself and in control of her work life, but the pleasure side could be damaged for a time.

The concepts of mastery and pleasure can help us identify the sources of well-being for women, and correct past mistakes. In the past, women were encouraged to look only at the feeling side of life as the source of all well-being. But we know that both mastery and pleasure are important. And mastery seems to be achieved largely through work. In our study, all the groups of employed women were valued significantly higher in mastery than women who were not employed.

A woman’s well-being is developed when she takes on multiple roles. At least by middle adulthood, the women who were involved in a combination of roles — marriages, motherhood, and employment — were the highest in well-being, in spite of warnings about stress and strain. 64. It can be inferred from the first paragraph that ________.

A. for women, a sense of “mastery” is more important than a sense of “pleasure”

5

B. for women, a sense of “pleasure” is more important than a sense of “mastery” C. women can’t have a sense of “mastery” and a sense of “pleasure” at the same time D. a sense of “mastery” and a sense of “pleasure” are both necessary to women 65. The author’s attitude towards women having a career is________. A. negative

B. positive

C. indifferent

D. realistic

66. One can conclude from the passage that if a woman takes on several social roles, ________. A. it will be easier for her to overcome stress and strain B. she will be more successful in her career

C. her chances of getting promoted will be greater D. her life will be richer and more meaningful

67. Which of the following can be considered as a source of “pleasure” for women? A. Family life Freedom from anxiety

One thinks of princes and presidents as some of the most powerful people in the world; however, governments, elected or otherwise, sometimes have had to struggle with the financial powerhouses called tycoons. The word tycoon is relatively new to the English language. It is Chinese in origin but was given as a title to some Japanese generals. The term was brought to the United States, in the late nineteenth century, where it eventually was used to refer to magnates who acquired immense fortunes from sugar and cattle, coal and oil, rubber and steel, and railroads. Some people called these tycoons “capitals of industry” and praised them for their contributions to U.S. wealth and international reputation. Others criticized them as cruel “robber barons”, who would stop at nothing in pursuit of personal wealth.

The early tycoons built successful businesses, often taking over smaller companies to

B. Multiple roles in society C. Regular employment D.

eliminate competition. A single company that came to control an entire market was called a monopoly. Monopolies made a few families very wealthy, but they also placed a heavy financial burden on consumers and the economy at large.

As the country expanded and railroads linked the East Coast to the West Coast, local

monopolies turned into national corporations called trusts. A trust is a group of companies that join together under the control of a board of trustees. Railroad trusts are an excellent example. Railroads were privately owned and operated and often monopolized various routes, setting rates as high as they desired. The financial burden this placed on passengers and businesses increased when railroads formed trusts. Farmers, for example, had no choice but to pay, as railroads were the only means they could use to get their grain to buyers. Exorbitant (过高的) goods rates put some farmers out of business.

There were even accusations that the trusts controlled government itself by buying votes

and manipulating elected officials. In 1890 Congress passed the Sherman Antitrust. Act, legislation aimed at breaking the power of such trusts. The Sherman Antitrust Act focused on two main issues. First of all, it made illegal any effort to interfere with the normal conduct of interstate trade. It also made it illegal to monopolize any part of business that operates across state lines.

Over the next 60 years or so, Congress passed other antitrust laws in an effort to encourage competition and restrict the power of larger corporations.

A. believed that the trusts had little influence over government B. expected the wealthy magnates to share money with the poor C. did little to build up American business

Don’t complain in the NBA

The NBA has a new rule this season. It’s called “zero tolerance”. NBA referees(裁判)are not letting players complain too long or too loudly about a referee’s call(裁判的判决). A player who does can be given a technical foul(犯规). Two technical fouls, and the player is out of the game.

The players don’t like the new rule and want the NBA to change it. They think it’s only natural to get angry during a close, hard-fought game if a call goes against you.

But I like the “zero tolerance” rule and wish other sports would follow the NBA’s example. Wouldn’t it be more enjoyable if football, soccer and tennis players stopped arguing the calls and just played the game?

The biggest reason I like the new rule is that it sets a good example to younger players. When kids see stars such as Rasheed Wallace of the Detroit Pistons shouting at the referees and arguing every call, they think it’s part of the game. But shouting at referees and arguing calls should never be part of any kid’s games. Kids should be taught to forget about the referees’ calls and pay attention to improving their skills and play their best.

All players need to learn that you control only one thing in a game, and that’s your own performance. You can’t control what the other players or trainers do. And you certainly can’t control the calls the referees make.

Finally, everyone from NBA all-stars to 8-year-olds should remember that being a basketball referee is a hard job. The referee has to make dozens of sudden calls. No hesitation. No second chances. Not even the best referee gets every call right.

Maybe if the players, trainers and fans who shout at the referees had to wear a whistle and call a few games, there wouldn’t be as many complaints about the “zero tolerance” rule.

Born in Nantong, Jiangsu Province on December 12, 1992, Chen Ruolin took up diving at the age of four. Since then, she has been training hard and overcoming whatever difficulty. She won two gold medals at the 2012 London Olympic Games. It is her great determination that has led her to success.

In my opinion, determination is very important in our lives. It encourages us to move forward, especially during our hard times. This quality enables us to face difficulty bravely and never run away from it. Thus we can stick to our goals and succeed eventually.

It is not easy to cultivate determination. Above all, we must hold a belief that everyone has the potential to achieve success. We shouldn’t be discouraged when faced with setbacks. Actually, failure can teach us a lot. What’s more, there are quite a few people with this spirit around us. We can learn a lot from them.
