Step I Revision and lead-in

Check the students’ homework.Go around looking at their proofreading work. Step 2 Reading

T: There are many differences between teenage boys and teenage girls. They have different attitudes on a variety of topics like school, hobbies and the future. They also have different types of friendships. Do you know the differences in friendships between boys and girls? Ss: No.

T: Now please open your books to page 18. Read the following school magazine article Teenagers’ friendships to learn more about different attitudes teenage boys and girls have about friendships.Read the first paragraph fast, and find the answer to this question: What puzzles Robert? (He can’t understand how girls can talk for so long.) T: Read the article carefully and decide the following sentences T or F : (F) 1.Both boys and girls have a lot to talk about with their best friends. (T) 2.Girls have more friends than boys, according to studies. (F) 3.Boys can easily name a best friend when asked.

(T) 4.If a boy is said to have a best friend, it seems that they share little about their feelings. (T) 5.A girl’s best friend might be the first to tell her about something good or bad that has happened in her life.

T: Now let’s listen to the tape and answer the following questions:

1.What did Amanda reply when asked what she and her friend talked about? (They talked about everything: film stars, pop songs, horoscopes, everything) 2.Why can’t boys name a single best friend?

( Because they are busy with homework and have so many friends that it is hard for them to choose.)

3.Can girls name their best friend? ( Yes, they can answer without hesitation.) 4.What are friendships between girls based on? (They are based on shared feelings and support.) 5.What are friendships between boys based on? (They are based on shared activities or interests.)

T: After reading the article, can you analyse the structure of the text? How many parts can the text be divided into? And what each part is about?

Part1: para1 The leading para: put forward the topic of the report.

Part2: para2-6 The body: state the details of a discussion or a debate. For instance, 30% of the students…, 50% of the students…,the rest of the students…

Part3: para7-8 The ending para(s): voice the writer’s opinions or present the writer’s summary.
