With winter coming, I finally decided to change the old blanket and quilt on my bed. After years of washing and dogs and cats jumping on them, they were worn-out.

I found a nice blanket at a store and dug out an old quilt from my dresser. But when I looked at the quilt, I noticed that near the corner was a piece of tape with my father's name written on it. I remembered that this was the same quilt he used at the nursing home during the last months of his life. I picked off the tape and held it in my hand. I looked up to the sky and smiled. I didn't think my father would mind if I used his old quilt now.

Spreading my father's quilt on the bed, I remembered the greatest paradox(悖论)of life: The end is really the beginning. Everything we go through in this life is preparation for the greater life to come.

Everything we face in this world can help us become better, stronger and kinder. The love we

choose in this life is the love we carry with us into the next. But knowing all this doesn’t reduce your love for life here on Earth. It intensifies(加深) it instead. Life here may be short and weak, but it is a gift.

My advice then is to live like today is your last day. Go through the day with an open heart. Welcome all the joy that the day gives you and share it with others.

Once a little boy had to work hard before sunrise every morning in the field, for his family were poor farmers. But at sunset there came an hour that was all his own, for his father had given it to him.

Then the boy would go up to the top of a hill and look across at another hill that rose some miles away. He could see a house with golden windows. “If they could afford golden windows, then there must be other nice things inside the house.” He imagined how great it would be to live there. Then be promised himself, “Some day I will go there and see this wonderful place.”

One morning, his father would go to the town and told him to stay at home for a rest. Knowing that this was his chance, he took a sandwich and headed across the field towards the house with the golden windows.

As the afternoon went on, he began to realize how wrong he was. The house was much farther than he had expected. As he went near the house, he saw no golden windows but instead a place in bad need of a painting. A small girl very close to his age came out of the poor house and stood by the broken fence. He asked her if she had seen the house with the golden windows.

The girl said, “Sure, I know.” and invited him to sit on the porch(门廊). As he sat there, he looked back from where he just came. There he saw the sunset turned the windows of his house to gold! Now he understood that everyone had his own house with golden windows. 9. Did he work hard all day without any free time? (no more than 3 words)
